O Canada: ‘Time Stands Still’  by Unleash the Archers [Song Stream]

Welcome to the inaugural segment of “O Canada“. In this weekly segment we will talk about and review band’s from… you guessed it. Canada. Hope you fellow Canadians enjoy this segment and hope it expands your libraries to include more Canadian metal. I do obviously hope that other people from around the world enjoy this as well. Let’s get it started!

Hailing from Victoria, BC we have Unleash the Archers. They are a power metal band currently signed to Napalm Records. They are also dropping a new record on June 2 2017 titled ‘Apex‘. We aren’t here to talk about ‘Apex‘ however, we are here for ‘Time Stands Still‘ so let’s get on with it.

I think the thing I love most about this band is the fact that they are a really fun band to listen to but remain a serious contender in the power metal scene. By fun I don’t mean goofy lyrics or silly songs or anything like that. They are a really fun band to sing along with and dance around like a fool. This is especially true with ‘Time Stands Still‘. An album without a single weak moment on it. It’s an incredible record. The vocals and instrumental aspects of the album are so tastefully done. Some of the highlight tracks are “Tonight We Ride” and “Test Your Metal“. “Tonight We Ride” is actually the first song I heard by this band and I’v been hooked ever since. It’s easily the most memorable song of this album. It’s a great song to sing along to and have fun with. It’s got a really quick pace to it and has some of the most impressive vocals on ‘Time Stands Still‘ and arguably their most catchy chorus they’ve made as a band.

I can say this album is more than deserving of a 8.2 out of 10. The key thing we have been talking about here is the level of fun. I have not heard an album in recent memory that gave me this amount of joy to listen to it repeatedly. There is no listeners fatigue on this disc, I was easily able to go start to finish over and over again without getting bored. What a great record. With a fantastic release like this, I can’t wait for ‘Apex‘ to release!

Album Review: ‘Welcome to the End’ by Stormhammer

Stormhammer is a power metal band reigning from Germany. ‘Welcome to the End‘ is the band’s 6th album and was released via Massacre Records. Let’s find out what this band has in place for us, shall we?

Stormhammer doing what they do best. Power metal. What we get with this record is more of what we have heard from this band before with a little more production  and consistency. Galloping guitars with some thrashy sections. The issues I have with this record are that the songs are a little to similar. Not to say there is no stand out tracks however. Songs like “The Law” and the album titled track “Welcome to the End” really showcase what this band is capable of, and that’s epic power metal. “The Law” is my favorite track. I absolutely love the speed and guitar structure in this song. I found myself whistling it all day and couldn’t get the chorus out of my head. Very cool song. Those damn solos are impressive!

I give this album a 7-10. The album is cool and has some pretty good hightlights. It’s easy to make it through the entire album without fatigue and is more than worth one playthrough. It’s hard to appreciate what this band and album have to offer first time around. Give it a go.

Album Review: ‘Dance with Devils’ by Deathless Legacy

Italian horror heavy metal band Deathless Legacy released their new album ‘Dance with Devils‘ on January 27 2017. The band uses a lot of haunting themes both audio and visually. Interesting concept but a lot band’s do it. How does this band stand out from the rest?

This album is really, really fun. I haven’t heard an album that kept me entertained like this in a long time. ‘Dance with Devils‘ feels like a haunted carnival ride. Halloween like lyricism throughout the entirety of the record but there’s so much more going on here. Right from the opening instrumental only track we are greeted with the idea of, I hate to sound redundant but, Halloween. There’s crazy set pieces on this record whether it’s straight up metal or if it’s orchestral or if it’s just haunting as all hell. This is a really cool record. A few highlights on this record are “Witches Brew“, “Lucifer” and “Voivode“. I had a hard time choosing my favorite between “Lucifer” and “Voivode“. “Lucifer” has organs! What the hell! How do they make organs fit in a metal song. I guess organ goes hand in hand with the themes this band implies. “Voivode” is probably the most well rounded track on this record. It’s got the band’s haunting weird stuff with more of a modern metal twist. More aggressive vocals and more metal instrumentals with some more straight forward “normal” sounding guitar work. It still has that weird awesomeness the rest of the record has as well.  This album is so interesting. Another really odd but cool track is “Curse of the Waltz“.

I give this album an 7.8 out of 10.  It’s the perfect album to pick up once and while and throw it on and remember how good it is. I could easily recommend this band to people.
